Resident Artists

TALAMH NUA is a new artist residency at The Art Hand on The Copper Coast in Waterford, Ireland. Environmentally conscious artists and creatives from near and far will stay and create in the area. Residencies will take place throughout the year, hosting one or occasionally two guests at a time.

Public Events

Local artists and members of the public will be invited by each of the TALAMH NUA residents to a public event during their stay. This might be a presentation of their work, a special film screening, an open day or a community artwork. In some cases the resident artist will ask for an assistant or collaborators throughout their stay.

Where did the name come from?

‘TALAMH NUA’ is the Irish for ‘New Ground’. The writer, Denis McClean coined the phrase during a conversation at The Art Hand about our plans. He is one of the many new friends that we have made  through the Talamh Land Art Festival, which we ran here on the Copper Coast for three memorable years. Dozens of amazing land artists from near and far participated in the festival each year along with hundreds of public participants.

Legacy

This new residency has grown directly out of our experience with this festival. We wanted to change the format while keeping its legacy intact. We’re excited to see what the future holds as this vibrant festival evolves into an intimate, year-round residency programme.

Evolution

Nothing stays the same, things change, things evolve, things grow, things die, things re-emerge and are reborn in magnificent ways. It is this renewal that fills us with hope. It is the rooted connection with the land and our ancestors that inspires us. The memories, the laughter, the blood, sweat and tears. These are the foundations of TALAMH NUA. By immersing yourself in a residency, our hope is that you too emerge with clarity, optimism and courage.

Our Mission

Nurture

As a result of the Talamh festival, there is now a community of practising land artists around Ireland. We intend to nurture and grow this community. The more of a like-minded community we can develop the better it will be for creative opportunities in the future.

Sharing Inspiration

We are so fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful and peaceful parts of the world. We want to share this with others so it can also be of inspiration to them.

Supporting Changemakers

The world could really do with more positive people creating change. We want to play our part by supporting these changemakers so that they are better equipped to make a difference in the world.

Creative exchange

As artists we believe that bringing guests into our home will be mutually beneficial. It will expose us to new creative possibilities. It will inspire us to think of our own work in different ways.

Community Connection

We believe that bringing artists to this location will bring vitality to the local community. Different perspectives, different opinions, exchanging ideas. We believe the resident artists will inspire creativity, wellness and environmental awareness.

Financial sustainability

The viability of running an arts facility in such a rural location has its challenges. The funding that we receive for these artists’ residencies will not only help the guest artists but will also help The Art Hand to be more financially sustainable. That way we can continue to do the work that has the greatest impact while enabling us to make a living.
